Legal Fellow - Human Frontier Collective (US)

ABOUT THE ROLE Scale AI is seeking a Legal Fellow to join the Human Frontier Collective, a program that unites leading legal scholars and practitioners with AI researchers to shape the next generation of generative systems. As a Fellow you will apply your legal expertise to evaluate, refine, and interpret AI outputs, ensuring they meet rigorous compliance, regulatory, and ethical standards. Your work will directly influence the design of tools that support legal decision‑making for enterprises, governments, and the public sector. The role is a fully remote, six‑month independent contractor engagement with the possibility of extension, offering an opportunity to contribute to high‑impact research while maintaining flexibility around your existing commitments. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will collaborate with Scale’s research and engineering teams to design realistic legal scenarios and assess model performance against statutory and case law benchmarks. You will provide detailed feedback on model outputs, identifying gaps in accuracy and regulatory alignment, and recommend actionable improvements. You will co‑author technical reports and research papers, contributing to publications such as SciPredict, PropensityBench, and Professional Reasoning Benchmark. You will participate in interdisciplinary workshops and virtual meetings with AI labs, sharing insights that drive responsible AI development. You will mentor junior researchers and contribute to the HFC community by sharing best practices and fostering a culture of rigorous legal analysis. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You hold a JD, LLM, or are currently enrolled in a 2L/3L program at a prestigious law school. Bar admission in any jurisdiction is strongly preferred, and experience as an attorney, legal analyst, in‑house counsel, or law professor is required. You possess advanced skills in legal research, regulatory analysis, constitutional law, case law interpretation, and drafting persuasive briefs. You are detail‑oriented, an innovative thinker, and able to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for AI systems. You thrive in collaborative, cross‑functional environments and can communicate effectively with engineers, data scientists, and product managers. Prior exposure to AI or machine learning is a plus but not mandatory.
